When shopping for various garments, you may have come across the term Oeko Tex, or the Standard 100 Oeko Tex. It is used throughout the Jasmine Silk website because we are proud that all of our silk products are Standard 100 Oeko Tex certified. But what exactly does that mean? For those of you who don’t know, we’re about to break it down so that you can better understand the quality of our garments.

Standard 100 Oeko Tex

Introduced in 1992, Oeko Tex is a test which determines whether or not a textile product contains any harmful substances. Textiles, and the process of making them go through rigorous testing and supervision to ensure they pass the criteria to achieve certification.

The aim of this is to make it clear for customers buying textiles whether or not they have been through tests for a range of harmful substances.

What Can be Certified?

All textiles and accessories can be Oeko Tex certified, not just fabrics. Here are some examples of what can be certified:

  • Woven and knitted fabrics
  • Raw or finished yarns
  • Buttons, zippers, sewing threads and labels
  • Domestic or household garments such as bed linen

What Harmful Substances Does it Check For?

The test involves extensive products checks as well as regular on-site visits to a company to look at the manufacturing process. It takes account of legal regulations such as Azo colourants, which are banned. It also checks for substances such as formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium and nickel.

In addition to this, numerous other harmful chemicals are checked for, even ones that aren’t legally regulated.
