Have you slept on silk bedding once before, or perhaps you have purchased it in the past and can’t seem to find the right set for you now? In this blog post, we are going to outline our tips and tricks on buying silk bedding, creating a helpful and insightful guide on what you should look for when buying sick bedding sets.

Types of silk and how they differ

There are varying types of silk, some more expensive than others, some silkier than others. There truly is something for everyone. However, navigating the vast realm that is the silk world, it can be daunting trying to find the silk that suits you and your needs best. There are lightweight and elasticity infused silks such as Charmeuse, whereas there are the highest of quality silks such as Mulberry, which is known to be the softest due to the mother silkworm. It is entirely personal choice as to which you find right for you, however, the slightly pricier items may be better in the long run as these are known to last far longer and are much more durable. However, the cheaper silks are still great for keeping you cool in the summer and warm in the winter, however will last a shorter period of time and will need replacing more often.

Winter silk vs summer silk

Unbelievably, silk is actually perfect for all seasons. Your silk pillowcases and silk sheets will not need to be switched out from season to season. However, if you get particularly hot in the summer, different silk duvet togs are available, or if you get cold in the winter, silk blankets are perfect for adding that extra bit of warmth to your bedding.

Silk regulates your body’s temperature and keeps your full body cool during the hotter months, due to it not being prone to bunch up like other bedding materials. This keeps your feet insulated, therefore regulating the body’s heat, which also keeps you warm in the winter. Other synthetic fabrics like down trap the air, which causes your body to heat up throughout the night, therefore, any sweat is also unable to evaporate, causing your sheets to get and stay wet. Silk is a fantastic choice, especially for women going through menopause, as their bodies cycle from hot to cold rapidly, and can become uncomfortable when sleeping in certain synthetics.

Choosing a silk duvet

When choosing a silk duvet, it is important to first think about what season in particular you are going to use it in. As mentioned above, different duvets for the different seasons are always recommended, and silk duvets are no different. The thicker the silk duvet, the warmer they are, so for a winter duvet to keep you warm and toasty during the coldest months, a thicker one is advised in comparison to a thinner, more lightweight one for the summer.

2-4 tog is ideal for a summer duvet, and is one that has no additional pieces of fabric added to it, therefore keeping it a cool duvet.

An 8-11 tog duvet is perfect for those who like to change their duvet in the spring and autumn months. Not too thick but not too thin, these duvets are great if you are looking to save money.

During the winter, you will want to have as many layers as possible to keep you warm, so winter silk duvets are recommended at around 12-13 tog. If you are in an exceptionally cold climate, cotton covered silk duvets are a brilliant choice.
