Well, we’re here to clear up some myths about silk, cashmere and modal while explaining some interesting facts about each to set the record straight.

Silk

Silk is a very highly sought-after fabric that originated in China. It’s famous for its range of benefits and is used for a variety of purposes.

Silk is Hypoallergenic – Fact!

Silk is a natural fabric, made from the cocoons spun by silkworms. It’s natural softness and roundness means it won’t irritate the skin. It is extremely gentle, and won’t irritate sensitive skin or more serious skin conditions such as eczema. 

This is one of the reasons why silk bedding is so popular, and why silk is also used for baby bedding because it is so gentle on their delicate skin. 

Silk is Cold – Fiction!

There is a common misconception that silk is a cold material and that it is only suitable for the summer months. However, silk is actually naturally temperature regulating, meaning it keeps you warm when it’s cold and cool when it’s warm.

This means that silk isn’t only great for bedding, but it also works well for garments like socks, glove liners and nightwear

Silk is Long-Lasting – Fact!

Since silk is so gentle and delicate, it doesn’t always give the impression of being a very strong and long-lasting fabric. However, one of silk’s best qualities is its strength. It’s amongst the strongest of all the natural fabrics, making it a long-lasting fabric that won’t deteriorate quickly over time. 

Silk is a Modern Fabric – Fiction!

While the qualities of the silk products we see today give the impression of being new and modern, the material actually goes all the way back to ancient China. Silk was discovered around the fourth century BC and has grown into one of the most highly sought-after fabrics in the world. 

Cashmere

Cashmere is an extremely soft form of wool, which is also a very highly sought-after fabric today. 

Cashmere is a Natural Insulator – Fact!

Cashmere is a natural insulator and it absorbs and releases water vapour as temperatures rise and fall. This makes it so incredibly comfortable to wear which is why it is used to make many types of clothing and accessories.

Cashmere is Itchy – Fiction!

Many people think wool-like fabrics are itchy and irritate the skin, but this is a common misconception. Cashmere is extremely soft and lightweight, meaning it is gentle on the skin. 

Modal

Modal is a common fabric used in consumer textiles which also has a variety of natural benefits which make it the perfect fabric for a variety of purposes. 

Modal Comes from Trees – Fact!

An interesting fact about modal fabric is that it comes from beech trees. The fibres are woven from cellulose that is extracted from the wood. Learn more about where it comes from in this blog.

Modal High Maintenance – Fiction!

Modal is rumoured to be a high maintenance fabric that takes a lot of caring for. But, this isn’t necessarily true. The modal at Jasmine Silk is machine washable at 30 degrees. It can also be tumble dried on a low heat setting. However, each modal garment will have individual washing instructions which you must adhere to in order to make it last.
