How is Mulberry silk made?

First and foremost, how is it made? And is it produced using different methods to other types of silk?

The mulberry silk that we use in our products are grown in China by local farmers. We have a close-knit relationship with all our farmers so we can manage every step of the production process.
You are probably aware of how silk is made, but for the most basic recap, Bombyx mori moths lay eggs which hatch into silkworms. These silkworms then spin beautiful cocoons to produce the most organic silk fibres. To find out more about the making of silk, see our “How is silk made” blog.

Hundreds of years ago, the most talented farmers realised that the quality of the silk can completely depend on what the silkworms eat. They discovered Mulberry leaves, which are from the Morus plant family and shortly after realised that silkworms feeding off these leaves can enhance the quality of their cocoons. Since then the world of silk changed forever!

Therefore, the theory goes that those silkworms that are fed on Mulberry leaves produce Mulberry silk. The end results are amazing to see. The individual long fibres are the purest of white, completely different to other types of silk that are less radiant with shorter strands.

So, what are the benefits?

Hypoallergenic

The sheer purity of the material creates a hypoallergenic fabric that contains one of the most natural proteins, sercine. This has the ability to reduce any potential allergic reactions or irritations. It is perfect for those who suffer from skin conditions such as eczema and rosacea. People with allergies benefit from wearing silk and also using silk sleepwear and bedding for a restful night’s sleep.

Luxurious Quality

Silk is a light, fine material that is luxuriously soft to the touch. Not only does silk feel high-end, it also looks it. The quality of mulberry silk is like no other material, making it a truly luxury choice for clothing, bedding and sleepwear – providing a multitude of benefits that other materials simply could not provide.

Durable

Despite the silky soft looks and feel, Mulberry silk is a highly durable and strong material. This makes it a practical choice for bedding that lasts for years to come if cared for correctly. Not only does silk bedding provide ultimate comfort, but it will last a lot longer than other materials used for bedding.

Breathable

Mulberry silk doesn’t retain moisture, making it a breathable and airy material – perfect for sleeping in or exercising in. Silk naturally regulates temperature also, allowing you to keep cool in the summer and warm in the winter. That means if you’re sleeping amongst silk, you’ll not be disturbed by your body temperature.

Mulberry Silk & Beauty

We know you’re probably thinking ‘just HOW much is Mulberry Silk good for?’ – trust us, a lot. Silk is yet to break fully into the beauty world, but let us let you in on a little secret…

In ancient times, Chinese princesses were renowned for their beautiful and youthful appearance. The secret behind their smooth complexion was they cleansed and massaged their face with silk beauty cocoons.

Silk cocoons contain the protein sericin, an important moisturising element found in anti-ageing creams and serums. When you gently massage your face with these cocoons, they release sericin while the textured surface gently exfoliates to create a strong anti-oxidant effect. They can help promote metabolism and nourish the skin to leave it feeling soft and radiant. It is particularly effective for pores and around the oily t-zone area of the nose and forehead.
