Over the years we have debunked many-a common myths regarding silk, but there are still prevalent and common silk queries people are suspicious of. Some of these myths and theories often put people off from sleeping in either silk garments or silk bedding. However, in this blog post, we are going to list just a few of them and dispel them right here for you.

MYTH #1: Silk is slippery

Whilst this is true, and silk is well known for having less friction and grip than other bed sheet materials such as cotton, you are unlikely to slip straight off of silk sheets and onto the floor. This myth was born all because of the often mistaken imposert satin “silks’ ‘ that are made from polyester rather than natural silk from silkworms. The polyester  made “satin silks” are extremely slippery whereas real silk sheets are truly just soft and luxurious.

MYTH #2: Silk sheets require extensive dry cleaning

If you have invested in some high quality silk the last thing you want is your washing machine to chew the luxurious fabric to pieces. This myth is entirely untrue however. That is if your sheets are good quality silk, these can be machine washed on a gentle cycle in cold water. They do not require any dry cleaning, as long as you have used a silk-friendly detergent. After multiple washes and continuous use, your silk sheets will naturally lose some of their luster after time, but will actually become even softer after a few washes. In fact, studies have shown that people tend to prefer their silk sheets or sleepwear after a few washes.

MYTH #3: Silk sheets are exceptionally expensive

It is true that good quality silk can come with a higher price tag and is one of the higher priced fabrics on the market. However, the benefits of silk sheets means paying the higher price is an investment in your long term health, well-being and sleep quality. When viewed as a long term investment, silk sheets are actually really affordable. The benefits from these will last over many years.

MYTH #4: All silk sheets are the same

There are a vast range of different types of silk sheets on the market today, and it can be difficult to compare sheets as many manufacturers fail to provide all the information you need to make the executive decision. It is always handy to carry out research on which is your preferred silk as there are many differences between them. For example, the momme weight of a silk sheet can range from 6-30mm for starters. Different types of silk with varying feels and finishes include Charmeuse Silk, Mulberry Silk, Tussah Silk and Habotai silk.

MYTH #5: Silk sheets will catch on my skin and get damaged

This is yet another case of mistaken identity. Satin “silk” from polyester is a man made fabric and therefore both slippery and will easily catch on your skin from hands and feet that are very rough or callused. However, with silk sheets that are purely made from 100% silk, they will not catch on your skin. It is a lot softer in texture and thinner fibres which are much smoother and less likely to get caught on rough skin. If you are looking for high quality, luxurious Mulberry silk, head over to our website to shop silk bedding, sleepwear and accessories.
