Whether you’re jetting off for a family holiday or you’re going on an overnight business trip, packing well is something that will help you have a smoother, more stress-free trip.

Making sure you have all the essentials, but not overpacking is where things become difficult, as well as making sure you pack so that your journey is as comfortable as it can be. To help you navigate the world of packing light and packing smart, Jasmine Silk has some handy tips and packing suggestions for you to think about.

Plan Ahead

This may be the oldest trick in the book but that’s for a good reason. The most obvious thing you can do to help your packing is to plan ahead, but making sure you actually do this is the key.

If you’re the type of person that plan’s to plan ahead, make sure you think about how much time you have beforehand, and set aside the right amount of time to get what you need ready and gather it together. Whether that means planning a shopping trip for toiletries ahead of time, or getting your clothes washed and dried in time, plan, plan, plan!

Choose the Right Bag

One way to stop yourself from overpacking is to not start with a bag that is too big. Choose a bag that is appropriate for the trip you’re going on and how long you’ll be away for. Sticking to the right bag ensures you don’t take anything you don’t need because there simply won’t be any room for it.

This goes for all your bags too. Your suitcase, carry-on, rucksack and even your toiletries bag shouldn’t be oversized.

Condense Your Clothes

Thinking that you’re going to have a completely different outfit every day while you’re away is what will cause you to overpack. The more sensible way to go about packing your clothes is to pack items that are interchangeable, like a mini capsule wardrobe in your suitcase. Choose things that you’re able to mix and match, and pack a couple of pairs of versatile shoes. It’ll save you precious space in your bag.

You may also want to select fabrics that aren’t bulky if possible, and if you have to take bulky fabrics, wear them to travel in.

Roll Your Clothes

Once you have condensed the number of clothes you’re taking, one packing tip you can use is to roll your clothes instead of folding them. This handy trick will not only help save you space in your bag, but it’ll also stop your clothes from getting creased.

Condense Your Toiletries

The same way that you condensed the number of clothes you’re taking, you can do the same with your toiletries. Start by packing your absolute essentials and consider buying travel-sized products to save space. Once these are packed, you can think about what other things you might want to take.

If your morning routine takes a dozen products, it’s time to be realistic and take only what you’ll require. It’s a time to be ruthless, lugging around bags of toiletries isn’t how you want your trip to go.

Our Suggestions

Now that we’ve gone over some of our expert packing tips, it’s time for a few suggestions.

Comfort For Your Journey

If you’re going on a long-haul flight or even a long car/train journey, you may find it useful to pack a few things that’ll make your journey more comfortable.

If you plan on sleeping on your journey, you may want to pack a silk eye mask. Small and lightweight, you can easily slip one of these in your bag. Great for blocking out the light and helping you sleep, silk eye masks are also gentle and moisturising. Learn more about the benefits of a silk eye mask in this blog.

Another item you can throw into your bag for your journey is a scarf. Scarves are versatile and can be used to wrap around you if you’re cold, they can be used to sit on, or to rest your head on if you’re uncomfortable. What’s more, you don’t even have to pack this item, simply wear it!
