A big dilemma for a lot of silk lovers is maintaining products and keeping them looking new. Can you spot treat silk? Should you use heat on silk? These are the questions you need to know the answer to in order to keep your silk looking sleek and fresh.

The Washing Process

First and foremost, make sure to read your garments’ care labels. Some silk articles are dry clean only, so make sure you follow as instructed.

To wash silk products yourself, it is advised to hand wash or machine wash at no higher than 30 degrees Celsius. Try not to be too rigorous when handling your silk to prevent and wear and tear.

Spot Treatments

When it comes to preventing and removing stains from silk, stay away from products that claim to offer spot treatment. To get rid of any discolouration or marks on your silk articles, try washing the entire piece first and if the stain remains, take further action by taking your item to the dry cleaner. Drying

For the drying process, some silk products condone the usage of tumble drying. However, you must always make sure you read the care labels to avoid accidentally ruining your silk garment.

As a safer option, that will also freshen up natural silk, is to hang your silk item up outside on a sunny day to air dry. Fresh air acts as a freshener and will not damage the silk.

Ironing

Ironing your silk bedding or clothing could be where things go south. After being super careful with handling and cleaning silk, ensure to keep this up when it comes to the ironing process.

Most silk garments can be cool ironed inside out, but again, read the care label to make sure that you don’t burn or tarnish the fabric.
