Often considered one of the finest, most luxurious fabrics readily available for purchase, Mulberry silk comes from silkworms produced from the Bombyx mori moth. It’s unique in the way it’s made and comes with a wide range of health, beauty and style benefits too! Mulberry silk is more refined than other types of silk as it’s made up of individual long fibres, which also helps to give it its bright white colour. This is what makes products that are 100% Mulberry silk so desirable, because not only are they high quality, but they’re durable too.

How is Mulberry Silk Made

To find out more about how Mulberry silk is produced, we have to take a trip to China. Local farmers that grow Mulberry trees – fruit-bearing plants typically found in Europe, Northern America and Asia – will harvest the leaves, which are then used to feed the silkworms. Thanks to this exclusive diet, some of the finest silk in the world is produced. Once the larvae eat enough food from the tree, they will begin to weave their cocoons, which will usually take anywhere between three and eight days. When the process is complete, the cocoon is unravelled to reveal the raw silk fibres. These will then be cleaned and spun to create the silk as we see it. Though it’s pure white in its original form, dye can be added to create different colours in varying shades and tones.

What Makes it So Good

Natural, 100% Mulberry silk is hypoallergenic and temperature regulating. What’s more, as it’s a protein, it will naturally fend off any sort of allergy microbe or odour-causing bacteria. However, to keep it at this standard, it’s important that you’re fully aware of how to care for such a special material. When washing, drying and storing Mulberry silk, it must be handled with the utmost care. Just because it’s a delicate material, it doesn’t mean it isn’t durable. Regular upkeep will increase its longevity, meaning that you’ll be able to enjoy its many benefits for years to come.

Natural, Odorless and Hypoallergenic

When it comes to Mulberry silk, this is what people are looking for. Not only this, but it’s a material that contains a protein called sericin, which is great if you tend to suffer from allergies as it can reduce the possibility of a reaction. Due to the way that it’s produced, Mulberry silk fibres are strong, so you can be sure that this is a material that’s designed to last. It’s definitely worth the investment if you ask us.

Is there a difference between Mulberry silk and Charmeuse silk?

Unlike Mulberry silk, charmeuse silk does not refer to a type of material. Instead, it is a silk fabric made with a particular way of weaving. This results in a stunning shine on the front side while there’s a slightly duller finish on the back. Thanks to this, it makes it ideal for products that don’t require both sides being on show, such as pillowcases, duvet covers and fitted sheets. In fact, charmeuse silk can be made from all kinds of silk, including Mulberry itself.

At Jasmine Silk, we only offer the very best when it comes to silk. Many of our bedding sets are charmeuse Mulberry silk, which is what makes them ideal for sleeping on.
